Don’t have SIRI? try these options

Ok so you don’t have SIRI and you want it but you still haven iPhone 4. While there are many apps that can help you do a combination of SIRI like tasks I want to focus on a couple that help to reduce the amount of apps to accomplish this without a jailbreak.

This first app is Vlingo (iTunes Link) and it does most of the voice recognition tasks that you would want. This app can send a SMS, email, voice dial, web search, search maps, post to Facebook and Twitter. The app works very well and the more you use it the better it learns your voice. When you want to send a SMS just say “text” Mike, “message” meet me for lunch?” and the app will even auto send it for you after a very brief count down incase you want to cancel. I was very impressed with the performance of this app even more so after using it for a period of time. It does quire a bit of set up but it’s very brief.

The next app is called VoiceCal (iTunes Link) and it allows you to schedule reminders and calendar appointments. This app also works well and uses Nuance voice recognition. With this app you can adjust some settings like turning on and off of voice feedback and setting it to a male or female voice, set your event duration, set your auto alarm and a second alert and it can be set to recognize end of speech or a manual option is available. The app looks similar to the stock calendar app but with a microphone icon in the lower right corner of the screen. Just a tap of this icon will trigger the app to start listening for input.

While these two apps may not cover everything that SIRI does they come close. The obvious draw back is that you will be using two separate apps. Don’t forget that if you want to play a song from your iPod library. You can use the native voice recognition in iOS by holding the home button for a few seconds and say what you would like to hear. With this same feature you can also voice dial too.
