Developed by some of the gaming industry’s blockbuster talent behind the likes of Metal Gear Solid, Halo, and F.E.A.R. Republique is a collaborative effort between Seattle-based Camouflaj and Logan specifically targeted for mobile touch based devices. Camoflaj turned to Kickstarter for some help from the public with this new game due to a lack of industry financial backing. They have managed to gather over $80k so far for the dev costs but are not yet at their $500,000 mark. Total cost to complete this title will topple $1 million and no word yet on pricing if or when the game is available.
This game has an interesting take due to game criteria and that they chose to bring it to a mobile platform opposed to console or PC. Here is a brief synopses of the game…
You receive a desperate phone call from Hope, a young woman trapped within a shadowy totalitarian state. Using a stolen phone, she calls and begs you to hack into the nation’s surveillance system, assume control, and help her escape from the clutches of the omnipresent Overseer.
Camouflaj is gearing the game play towards your interaction and “symbiotic” relationship with the main character. Unlike using on-screen controls you will be using touch based actions to navigate game play (think Infinity Blade). This is a bit of a different take for controlling a game that might mainly appeal to core gamers. Unlike most games where the player controls his/her character, Hope is not a character you directly control but she is a “smart, believable, and empathic hero” that you must help guide.
Republique is described by Camouflaj as a Stealth Survival hybrid that has a 4-6 hour campaign, Has full voice overs and real-time cinematics. Motion capture was also used for the fluid life-like action in the gameplay as well. The game looks very promising and as a mobile based game something that we would like to get our hands on. We will keeping our eyes on this one.
Update: It seems that many of Kickstarter backers are voicing their opinion about Republique not being launched on PC or Mac. Well Camouflaj listened and now the are working on a slightly different experience for Mac and PC. So now the game will not only be launched as a mobile version about will also be available for multiple platforms.
