If your new to Jailbreaking and you just installed Absinthe 2.0 there are a few things to do right after the Jailbreak is installed. First you may want to add some more sources which I ‘ll describe immediately below, next you may want add some tweaks to spruce up you device and the last thing you ABSOLUTELY must do is change your mobile and root passwords. Let’s start with adding a source…
You want to open Cydia and let it update. Once it does it will ask you if you’re a User, Developer or a hacker. This should be easy but for most of us we will choose User.(If you’re beyond a user or an experienced Jailbreaker you will not need to read this “How To”)
Once that’s done you will need to add sources to Cydia so you can find all of the fun Tweaks and different apps or packages to install on your device. Here how you do it-
Method 1
1. Open Cydia and make sure to tap “Refresh” at the top of the Changes tab.
2. On the Home page about half way down tap “More Package Sources” and make sure to read about the source before you install.
3. Tap a source you want to add then tap “install” at the top of the screen. On the next screen tap “Confirm” to install.
Method 2
Also you could do a Google search for Cydia Sources to find some sites that list sources. Here is one iPhone Techie
1. In Cydia tap on Manage> Sources
2. Now tap “Edit” on the top right of the screen
3. Then tap “Add” on the top left of the screen. When you tap Add Cydia will prompt you to “Enter Cydia/APT URL” this is the source or URL for the Repository you are about to add.
4. Type in the URL of the Repo and tap “Add Source” and let Cydia install it.
Just do this for every Repo or source you want to add.
Tweaks –
I’ll only cover a couple since there too many to cover, but you can find a slew of them in Cydia especially aster adding more sources.
One my favs is “Page Preview” (v2.0 supports iOS 5.1.1) this little tweak by Elias Limneos is pretty sweet. By tap and holding the page selector indicators near the bottom of the screen a small preview of the home page shows. While holding slide your finger left and right between the pages to select a page. Lift your finger and iOS will snap to that page. Also in the same respect while holding, once you find a page that has an app you want to launch just drag your finger up to the app and lift. The app will then launch. This app works on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
SBSettings is another must have tweak. This app works by swiping your status bar left or right (and can be changed vis Activator) gives you a drop down window with a vast amount of functionality. Primarily toggles can be set to access WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, Data, Airplane mode, Processes (which can be killed), and much more. this app makes it unbelievably convenient to quickly get to those functions that are used most. Since iOS 5 this app can also be set to the Notifications Center as a widget which comes in very handy and works on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Check out this video from iPhoneForums.net they sum it up very well.
Changing your mobile password and root password –
this is important because your device “can be” vulnerable to malicious attacks once you jailbreak. I say “can be” because if you change these two passwords you virtually eliminate the possibility of these malicious attacks and its pretty simple to do.
First you want to download Mobile Terminal. You can find this app in the http://www.ijailbreak.com/repository/ or in cydia.myrepospace.com/iPhoneTechie/ sources. Just search for Mobile Terminal.
next to change your root password open the mobile terminal app and type these commands in exactly as they appear
hit return after every command
1. su root
2. alpine
3. passwd
at this point you will need to enter your new password. Make sure that you type it in exactly as you want is as Mobile Terminal will not display the text. It will then ask you to enter it again. When your done hit return.
4. exit
Now to change your mobile password. Following the same process as above press return after every command…
1. passwd
2. alpine
now type in your password and will ask for it twice.
3. exit
My sources are taking forever to load. I’m not new…. is it just the first day of JB the new stuff and that’s why its slow? Literally taking 10+ minutes and not fully loading…. all normal sources.
I think your right. Since its the first day on the release Cydia’s servers are most likely being hit pretty hard.
